I loved how many characters were in a scene, how dynamic the sprites and their 'movements' were, and how all the scenes felt like being in a cutscene or CG. Nightshade did what no other otome game I've played so far has managed, which is, with sprites and the core group (which extend to non-love interests), to convey this sense of spatial dimension. You don't get an A–Z of their life, as tends to be the case in, say, JRPGs with typical party members and their arcs. Spiritfarer is profound and soothing its (multiple layers of) characterization has me in awe, especially with how it only offers fragments of its characters, just as when you get to know someone, or meet an old friend, and catch up in broad strokes what's been going on in their life. (Zero Escape, Ghost Trick and The House in Fata Morgana are pretty much the only other games I'd say that about.) Its humour and dynamic style are one thing, same with its drama and very human touches, but I think it's its underlying optimism that has truly touched me I find myself missing that loud optimism ever since I've finished the game. 428: Shibuya Scramble is a must-play for anyone who enjoys mystery/thriller visual novels and hybrids I'd love my memory for this game wiped so I can reexperience it all over.
